Discuss She Made It

In order to promote dialogue, discourse, and discussion about the ideas and images in this initiative, we invite you to participate in an online forum of issues raised by She Made It.

1. Creating the Programs:
What is a “woman’s show"? What programmatic elements contribute to this label? Is the label positive or pejorative?

How do you feel about certain genres of programming—the soap opera and the cooking show, for example—being labeled “women’s shows"?

Discuss female television and radio characters created by women. When you watch a program are you conscious that the program was created in part by a woman?

Do female journalists report the news in a distinctive manner? If so, how?

How have female sportscasters affected the way athletic events are presented on radio and television?

2. Running the Show:

What strides have women made as executives at media companies over the last fifty years? Twenty years?

Do you think it is accurate to say a glass ceiling exists at media companies? Do female executives in the media business currently have the same opportunities for advancement as men?

Do women tend to differ from men in their management styles? If so, how?

3. She Made It Initiative:
To what areas of television and radio do you think women have contributed the most?

How many of the She Made It women did you know? What did you know about them before this project?

Considering the honorees as a whole, do you see any traits that they have in common?

Are there any women who you think should be included in the She Made It initiative?

How do you feel about initiatives like She Made It, or Britain’s Orange Prize for Fiction, which honor women's accomplishments separate from men's?
