woman's show
At this point in our history any kind of "show" label: "women's show", "black show", "gay show" etc is pejorative. The premise is that somehow women are concerned with issues that don't have relevance to other people in society. The term "chick flick" is totally derogatory. Very often the Lifetime network is the butt of jokes (not that they don't deserve some ribbing sometimes, as all networks do) but the joke butt is because presumably it caters to women's viewing interests, therefore it's ok to degrade and make fun of it.
The popularity of TV has come about in order to sell things. By creating shows that can be dismissed because of their cast or content synopses, it makes it easier for advertisers to determine which shows to buy time for. As we move forward, however, our nation is discovering that women and men tend to want basically the same things. Thanks to the strides women before us have made, now women want sports and business products and men want domestic products. And of course everyone wants TVs.
